Persian
and Oriental Rug History
Iran, formally called Persia, is known for its artistic achievement in the weaving of oriental carpets. The history of rug weaving dates back to over 2,500 years. The Safavid Dynasty (1502-1722) saw the development of carpet factories in several cities such as Kerman, Isfahan, Kashan, Tabriz, and Herat. These cities lent their names to the final products that were produced and sold throughout the world.
Each individual rug is unique. The weaving techniques, the designs and patterns, the types of dye and colors are all identifiable to a specific geographic area or nomadic tribe. Most of the patterns seen in today’s rugs originated in Iran and were integrated in Kurdish, Caucasian, Central Asian, Chinese, East Turkestan and Tibetan rugs. The difference between a Persian and Oriental rug is the place of origin. All rugs are classified as Oriental rugs, even Persian rugs, but Persian rugs are considered to be the finest in the industry with Iran producing more rugs than any other country.
A Persian or Oriental rug will compliment any décor and bring warmth and beauty to homes throughout the world. They are treasured possessions and heirlooms that are handed down from one generation to the next, preserving their story and artistry through the years.
